Bretton Greens is a project which will work with the local residents of Bretton (and Peterborough) to creatively rediscover and enhance the green spaces in their neighbourhood.
The project will run in four stages, outlined below. At each stage there are lots of opportunities to get involved and we will update our website with all the latest news!
Our base for all activities will be the Pyramid Community Centre, Watergall, Bretton.
This project is funded by Peterborough Presents.
Stage 1: Rediscover
Walks, Activities and Workshops in April
Stage 1 is about re-discovering Bretton, and uncovering hidden potential! We will host smell, memory and poetry-led walks; as well as a community sports day and an environment themed Easter egg hunt. Each will offer a new way of seeing and interacting with the green spaces in Bretton.
Each activity will involve using a creative activity to process our findings; what spaces came to life when we explored them through our noses? How do spaces have more meaning when you hear about them from the memories of your neighbour?
Stage 2: Design
Exhibition & Workshops in May – June
All the findings and material produced in Stage 1. will be presented at a community exhibition; pinned to a large scale map of North Bretton.
At the start of the exhibition, we will launch a public competition, asking people to put forward an idea of how to improve or enhance a green space in Bretton keeping in mind the findings of Stage 1.
To help people enter the competition, we will host hands-on, creative workshops at the exhibition space, run by Arts, Gardening and DIY specialists!
Stage 3: Implement
Hands on! In July – August
Following a public vote, the winning 3 ideas from stage 2 (one in each category: Arts, Gardening and DIY) will be announced at Bretton Festival on 8th July.
Throughout the remainder of July and August, our specialists will be implementing these winning designs with the help of residents.
Stage 4: Sustain
Walk & celebrate
September – ongoing
The most important thing is that all the changes made are looked after and maintained. Stage 4 is the ongoing process of maintaining these changes.
Our designer, will produce a map of North Bretton, showing all the green spaces and the sites we worked on and proposing a new community walking route to link up these spaces and more.
To celebrate, we will host a large scale community walk, during which we will enjoy highlights from the overall programme!
